Sam Paolini art show opening @ Steez Gallery

It's always nice to see young local artists getting space and creating shows, even in Nashua, New Hampshire.  I happened on this opening tonight.  I wanted the skate deck.  I bought a button.  (grin)

Banthers (bathers and dancers, bathers and dancers, bathers and dancers)

The Boston MFA is open for free from 4:45pm-9:45pm on Wednesdays.  So go.

This is a wonderful exhibition, interesting, provoking.  And it has at least one Picasso and some other great comparison artists painting in the late 1800's and at the turn of the century.  Brilliant Monotypes.  Brothel sketches.  Massive works of pastel, which is the oddest medium to gain fame for, in my opinion.  Bold charcoals.  Just wonderful.

I myself am fascinated by the late 1800's in particular, and appreciated this specific glimpse through Degas eyes, as well as the transformation of his style and technique and artistic voice over a near fifty year period.

Flower Power

My friend Erica, the abolitionist, is creating these flowers, fashioned from fair trade saari scraps from India.  With a bit of glue, felt, and fastenings, she's designed and made some of the most appealing pieces of fashion art that I've seen in ages.  Soon to be on sale to benefit anit human trafficking...more info coming up.  Love 'em.

"Life is for" song

"I woke up this morning and I didn't have a hat." -Sam Myers

Ever see these at Walmart or the craft store?  I have.  And now I'm going to get one.  Sam has made my decision for me.  "I woke up this morning and I didn't have a hat.  And it's going to snow."

I love it when boys sew and do crafts.  It reminds us all that sewing is power.  The power to imagine something and then make it with our bare hands.

The Bitch of Fear

All right.  I feel strongly that the following statement, spoken oh so casually by one of the brightest minds and fastest tongues I know, was worthy of immediate immortalizing.  Second best to a tattoo, I turned to the cheaper and less painful option of stitching into my favorite t shirt.  Truer words were hardly ever spoken.

"Here's the thing about fear.  If you don't recognize it, and call it out for what it is, it will own your ass forever.  You will be the bitch of fear."

"Change" song

My brilliant genius stylist-and sister Elizabeth, and I, spoke today on the phone.  I told her how, even though my hair is fried to a crisp, and faded to death, and we are SO doing hair surgery in the morning... people KEEP telling me lately that I look like Tori Amos.  So...she goes, "Oh, great.  Cause you're going for the suicidal agnostic look."

Ha!  What??!??!

And I KNEW I had to use that as a lyric in a song.  Immediately.  (laughing)

I love my friends and I love my life, and I am so glad to be surrounded by such funny, smart and wonderful people.
I feel so...rich.

(lyrics)

limitless reaches of space
behind each of your faces
stare me down
a labyrinth of ladders and chutes
going no place

break me out of this case
joint or the head of which
i cannot place
say i'm pretty, yeah, say that i'm pretty
don't let it hit you on your way

oh great, i was going for the
suicidal agnostic look
so why's it always on the day
before the day
everything's about to change (for good)

life's a spinning prism
it is not a prison
so keep it turning in the light
keep it turning in the light.
